What does sustainability mean to you?

Sustainability is people and companies working very hard to create already existing objects (that the majority of the human race refuse to stop purchasing) in a way that is kinder to our planet and paying their workers a living wage, in a safe environment. The latter two are often forgotten when we talk of sustainability and ethical sourcing.

I believe when one is engaged in the act of choosing sustainably it makes one more present in the now, and present in listening to what we really want and need. Noting that our actions count, and can make a positive difference. Something that I know a lot of us are struggling to believe right now.

Society is often at the mercy of purchasing what is offered to us at supermarkets, shops, and so forth. How wonderful it would be if it was mandatory for all supermarkets to have re-fill stations and bulk bins. I believe if this option was readily available we would use it. If it was only possible to buy ethically sourced clothing we would buy it.

What measures do you try to take, both professionally and personally, to be more sustainable?

I try to determine what I need from what I want, and then make my choices from that. Such as I want a new pair of trousers, but I don’t need them because I have plenty in my closet. When I do purchase new items, I do my best to buy from designers and companies that are following ethical and sustainable guidelines, where money goes to charitable causes, and to purchase from secondhand stores. I donate all the clothes that I no longer wear. I do my best not to buy anything wrapped in plastic. I don’t use disposable make-up wipes, I use a washable cloth.

In your opinion, what are some good ways of slowing down our approach to consumption? Where can we refocus and rethink in terms of our modern lifestyle?

I think everyone who works in the fashion industry needs to be educated on how it impacts the health of our planet, and what they can do to change any current practices in their business that are negative. Brands and companies to pay all their workers living wages, and confirm that they all are working in safe conditions.
