Quintana Hoyne

Model

We'd love to hear a little about you - what is your current journey, and what things from your past influence you as you move forward?

I am a simple girl at heart and I like to make people happy. So I focus on sports, being healthy, and feeling optimistic.

What does sustainability mean to you?

It means a low carbon footprint, buying and sourcing and manufacturing as locally as possible. It means ’less is more’, using less to make less, buying less to keep less. It means happiness within.

Please tell us more about your work and role as ambassador to Parley.

I started working with Parley as a curious intern to learn more about the ocean. I love the ocean and ocean sports. Later on, Cyrill (founder of Parley) and I met, and we talked about how models have a voice in making changes in fashion. So I decided to commit to doing what I can as an ambassador.

Principally, my role is to spread the word, in public speaking and in representing ocean activism. We are working on a speaking panel project.

As a model, what do you love about your industry, and what changes would you still like to see?

As a model, I love the free and creative people who act outside of the box within my industry. I would like to see more internally driven choices around being responsible and being green. The pressure to sell can be too much for people in our industry.

How much of the weight of trying to protect the planet should be on the individual - what are the specific things you try to be aware of yourself? What can we do as individuals, and where should the government and companies take responsibility?

I do not claim a global view on sustainability. I can only speak for what I do — I try to consume around my radius of vicinity. I am aware of using paper bags, reusable bags, no plastic. I am aware of using and buying less.

We can do a fair bit as individuals, even though the government and companies can accomplish more on a bigger scale.

In your opinion, what are some good ways of slowing down our approach to consumption? Where can we refocus and rethink in terms of our modern lifestyle?

Slowing down is the key to slowing down consumption.

We would love to hear more about your approach to fashion, wardrobe, and style.

I like vintage designer. And I like tactical clothing good for skating, good for climbing, durable, like denim for example. I like keeping up with what my friends create in terms of vegan leather fashion and faux fur.

Is there a garment in your wardrobe that is of special importance to you, or that has an interesting story you would like to share?

I have a cap from Biarritz, a kimono from Bali, a wool sweater from Oslo, a coat from London, and a jacket from Paris. When I buy local, I carry memories of the travels too.
